Downtown Walking Tour

A walk through downtown Dell Rapids is a trip back through time. In 1978 three commercial blocks of Dell Rapids were placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • The distinctive quartzite buildings along Dell Rapids' the Street commercial strip dating back to 1888 and includes The Grand Opera House.

  • The 1902 Dieson Department Store is now home to the Dell Rapids Museum.

  • The 1889 First National Bank Building, with its castle-like crenellated towers, is just one of many prominent architectural features along the downtown historic district.
     
               
The Rose Stone Inn -- today a bed and breakfast -- began in 1908 as a hotel for salesmen disembarking from the passenger train.

One block south of the historic business district, the City Park and Bathing Beach, established in 1913, features three historic structures: the 1934 Big Sioux River bathhouse, the 1936 rose stone amphitheater, and the 1929 Dell Rapids bridge spanning the Big Sioux.
